Online safety
Risk assessment & transparency · Last updated 17 September 2026
Veya is a user-to-user service under the Online Safety Act 2023. This page summarises our illegal-content and children's-access risk assessments, the safety measures we operate, and how we deal with reports. It is reviewed at least every six months and whenever we make a significant change to the service. Veya is operated by Veya Connect Ltd (registered in England and Wales, company number 17317698), 124 City Road, London, England, EC1V 2NX.
1. What Veya is
Veya is a UK dating and shared-activity app for adults aged 18 and over. Members create a profile, browse other members, match, message one-to-one, join group chats and community spaces, post short-lived Stories and Moments, and attend hosted or charity date events. Members can upload photos, short videos and voice notes.
The service is small-scale and UK-focused. There is no livestreaming to strangers, no anonymous posting, no end-to-end encrypted messaging, and no public content feed visible to people without an account.
2. How we assess risk
We follow Ofcom's risk-assessment framework: we consider each kind of illegal harm and each children's-harm category, judge the likelihood and impact on our service given how it actually works, record the measures that reduce that risk, and note what we still need to improve. Evidence comes from our own moderation and report data, automated image and text screening results, member feedback and published Ofcom guidance.
3. Illegal content risk assessment
Grooming and harm to children
Medium riskThe service is adults-only, so the main risk is an under-18 creating an account by giving a false date of birth and then being contacted by adults.
- Strict 18+ rule in the terms and at sign-up; date of birth captured at registration
- Accounts suspected of being under 18 are suspended pending verification and removed if age cannot be confirmed
- Photo verification with selfie gesture checks; unverified accounts carry a visible safety notice
- In-app reporting on every profile and conversation, including an 'under 18' reason
- Known gap: age is currently self-declared. We are assessing highly effective age assurance and will update this page when it is in place.
Intimate image abuse and unsolicited sexual images
Medium riskMembers can send photos and post images, so unwanted sexual images are a realistic risk on a dating service.
- Nudity and sexual content are banned outright by the Acceptable Use Policy
- Automatic image screening on profile photos, Stories, Moments and story video posters; flagged images are hidden immediately, before another member sees them
- Members whose image is hidden are told it breached the rules and asked to upload a different photo; repeat breaches log strikes and can end the account
- One-tap report and block in every conversation
Harassment, stalking, threats and hate
Medium riskDirect messaging between strangers carries an inherent harassment risk.
- Messaging is only possible between mutually matched members
- Block, unmatch and report available in every thread; blocking removes access in both directions
- Automated text screening on messages and profile content, applied at the database level so it cannot be bypassed by the app
- Strike logging, suspension and permanent removal for repeat offenders
Fraud, romance scams and financial harm
Medium riskRomance fraud is the most common illegal harm reported on dating services.
- Photo verification badges and duplicate-content checks: accounts reusing another member's profile text are held for human review instead of being auto-verified
- In-app safety guidance warning members never to send money
- Reporting reasons for scams and fake profiles; confirmed scam accounts are removed and their matches unmatched
Sexual exploitation, trafficking and prostitution ads
Low riskCommercial sexual services are prohibited and the closed, match-gated design makes broadcast advertising ineffective.
- Prohibited by the Acceptable Use Policy
- Automated text screening for solicitation patterns and external contact funnelling
- Manual review of reports within 24 hours
Terrorism, extreme violence and self-harm promotion
Low riskNo public broadcast surface and no algorithmic recommendation of content to strangers, which limits reach.
- Prohibited content categories in the Acceptable Use Policy
- Automated screening plus reporting on all user-generated content
- Escalation to law enforcement where content indicates a credible threat to life
Drugs, weapons and other illegal sales
Low riskLimited commercial surface; no marketplace or payments between members.
- Prohibited by the Acceptable Use Policy
- Automated keyword screening and member reporting
4. Children's access assessment
Veya is not designed for or directed at children, contains no content aimed at under-18s, and requires every member to confirm they are 18 or over. We do not believe a significant number of children use the service, and we have never knowingly permitted one. We nonetheless treat under-18 access as a live risk because age is self-declared, and we remove any account we believe belongs to someone under 18. Improving age assurance is our highest-priority safety work.
5. Measures we operate
- Adults-only service with date-of-birth capture and removal of suspected minors.
- Automated image screening for nudity and sexual content on all uploaded images and video posters.
- Automated text screening on profiles, messages and community posts, enforced at the database layer.
- Optional photo verification, with manual review where automated signals look suspicious.
- Reporting and blocking on every profile, message thread, community space and event.
- Human review of every report, with a commitment to a first decision within 24 hours.
- Strikes, feature restrictions, suspension and permanent removal as enforcement steps.
- Safety guidance for meeting in person, and safety notices on unverified accounts.
- Screenshot discouragement on native apps, and owner-controlled profile share links.
- Retention of moderation records and audit logs so decisions can be reviewed and appealed.
6. How to report something
Use the report button on any profile, message, post or event — this is the fastest route and gives our team the context automatically. You can also email Support@veya-date.com.
We aim to make a first decision on every report within 24 hours. Content we believe is illegal is removed as soon as we are aware of it. Where there is a risk to life or evidence of child sexual abuse material, we escalate to the police and the relevant authorities. If you disagree with a decision, reply to the outcome message or email us and a different reviewer will look at it again.
If you are in immediate danger, call 999. You can also report to the Internet Watch Foundation (child sexual abuse imagery) or Action Fraud (romance fraud).
7. Transparency
We publish the categories of reports we receive, the action taken and our response times on request, and we will publish an annual summary as the service grows. Moderation records, strikes and appeal outcomes are retained so that our enforcement can be audited.
8. Governance and review
Overall accountability for online safety sits with the director of Veya Connect Ltd. Day-to-day moderation is carried out by the Veya safety team. This assessment is reviewed at least every six months, and before we launch any feature that changes how members find or contact each other.
