The app you're on does half the job

Safety features vary enormously between apps, and the differences aren't cosmetic. Before anything else, look at what the platform prevents by default rather than what it lets you report afterwards.

• No unsolicited messages

  If anyone can message you without a mutual match, your inbox becomes a filter you have to run. Apps where a conversation only exists after both people opt in remove the most common low-level harassment entirely.

• Photo verification

  Knowing the person behind the profile is the person in the photos eliminates catfishing and most bait accounts. It should be prominent, not buried.

• Approximate location only

  Nobody should be able to work out where you live, work or run from a dating profile. Approximate distance is enough to make a match; precise coordinates are not.

• Blocking and reporting that works

  A block should be instant, invisible to the other person and total. Reports should reach a human team that acts on them.

• Age enforcement

  A hard 18+ gate at sign-up is a basic standard, not a feature.

What to look for before you agree to meet

A few quiet checks before the date cost nothing and filter out most problems early.

• A quick video call

  Two minutes confirms identity, manner and chemistry. Anyone genuine will say yes; reluctance after several days of chatting is information.

• Consistency

  Does what they say about their job, city and life stay consistent across a week of conversation? Small contradictions often arrive before big ones.

• How they handle a no

  Say no to something small early — a venue, a time, moving to WhatsApp. The reaction tells you more than a month of charm.

• Pressure to leave the app

  In-app messages are logged and covered by reporting tools. A rush to move the conversation somewhere private is worth declining without explanation.

The first date, done well

Public, busy, your own transport, and a friend who knows the plan. Daytime and early-evening first dates aren't just safer — activity dates in public places (a walk, mini golf, a market) give you a crowd, a shared focus and a natural end point, which is why they beat a dark corner table for a first meeting.

Keep your home and work address to yourself until you've earned trust in it, and treat "I'll walk you to your door" as something you can decline at least the first couple of times.
